Animal Charities, Richmond, Virginia

Since we are in the beginning of our annual “Dog Days of Summer” event I thought we would share information on some of our favorite pet charities!  As some of you know, during the month of August your pet portrait session fee of $75 will be donated to the charity of your choice.  We are frequently asked to refer some organizations, so I thought this post would get your creative juices flowing when deciding the organization for your donation.  If you know of an organization that you would like us to feature please email us at and we will spread the word.  We will be posting info on more charities over the next few days, so if you do not see your favorite organization mentioned please be patient as our great city has so many excellent organizations helping pets in need!

Furthering Education and Treatment for Companion Health

FETCH a Cure is a 501 ©(3) non-profit organization determined to improve quality of life by connecting people and pets through accessible, compassionate treatment and education.

Our vision is simple: A community where no one is denied a choice for their pet due to lack of options, education or funding.

Helping People. Helping Pets.

Through community outreach by way of events, campaigns and fundraisers, FETCH is working to promote the need to help pets live long, healthy lives. FETCH contiually works to raise awareness and further education about pet cancer prevention, detection and treatment and senior care and aging issues.

We provide financial aid to families unable to bear the cost of the life-saving treatments for their pets that have been diagnosed with cancer through the Companions in Crisis program. FETCH continues to work towards providing more accessible treatment options for all within our community.

Through the Pixie’s Pen Pals program, FETCH is helping rescue dogs and inmates in Virginia correctional centers have a second chance. By working cooperatively and bonding with the animals, the inmates learn responsibility, patience, tolerance and life-long skills and the trained dogs find life-long homes.

About Furs

Friends United with the Richmond Shelter (FURS), Inc. was founded in 2001 by a group of dog lovers determined to help the homeless population.  Alarmed by the number of animals being euthanized, the FURS volunteers have focused their rescue efforts on dogs at Richmond Animal Care & Control, the euthanizing facility that serves the City of Richmond.  To date, FURS has rescued, rehabilitated, and placed over 500 dogs who would otherwise have been put to death–in many cases simply for no other reason than lack of space at the city shelter.

Focusing on quality adoptions versus the quantity of dogs adopted, FURS carefully screens all applicants to ensure that our dogs are going to compatible homes where they will be loved and cared for the rest of their lives.
